The BBC Homepage gets a makeover

Filed under: General — James Holden @ 4:26 pm

As of a few minutes ago, the BBC has gone live with it’s new homepage.

The new site is an iGoogle type affair with re-positionable content blocks, location specific content and, rather quirkily, a flash rendition of the old BBC clock, which will only be recognisable to those over a certain age.

There was a beta version of the new homepage floating around for a while which garnered somewhat mixed opinion, but it appear that they have launched with pretty much what was on the table then.

Most encouragingly it degrades very gracefully with JavaScript switched off. Also, at the HTML level the page is mostly composed of headings and lists with the layout being entirely derived by CSS.

  1. I like it. My main problem when I first saw the beta was that it was brown. The colours different now, but I think it actually changes during the day.

I like how I can move bits around. Not a new idea, but it means I can move sport to under the fold.

  2. Richard - you can customise the colour scheme, but you’re right - the default is to cycle through the palette.

  3. I like it, and the functionality is fun, but I have to say it feels like technology for the sake of it - it’s little more than a gimmick.

  5. Hey Andy…

Actually, I’m pretty glad I’m not the dance music DJ. I probably have a far more interesting life.

The really funny thing, is that when I was at school I did all the school discos, so I was DJ’ing before my namesake was, and I wouldn’t be surprised if at least some of my school friends think it’s me. We grew up in the same town, but he’s a couple of years younger than me.

Cheers - “The Real” James Holden

  6. Hi. Sure u’re right & I didnt mean any offence.. Thats just a bit of a fun - u’ve got sucha a serious internet site whilst the dance dj’s one’s the craziest site i’ve ever seen. no doubt - u’ve got a great life.. though if u followed his, even a little but u would’ve known he’s way too weird for leading a typical life of a ‘dance dj’… btw.. his music’s worth listening to despite its just some dance stuff.
p.s. ‘interesting life’ sounds a bit like damon albarn’s early lyrics for blur…

yep. im not andy actually, im nata. but thats no important.
