HOWTO: Dishwasher Your Keyboard

Filed under: General — James Holden @ 11:54 am

Some time ago, a friend of mine at spilled Coke into his expensive Logitech DiNovo wireless keyboard. It didn’t do it much good.

Since then, I found out that you can put keyboards in the dishwasher to remove crud and grime and - spilt Coke. With nothing to lose, he volunteered his keyboard for the treatment.

After taking all the screws out of the back, the keyboard splits into two. All the bluetooth electronics is conveniently in the back of the keyboard, with a ribbon cable connecting the two. I just washed the top part with the keys. A bit more research revealed that standard dishwasher detergent was quite OK to use (I used half a ‘Glist 3 In 1 Plus’ tablet). I can’t see any reason why the chemicals in the tablet would harm anything in the keyboard.

So in it went. It’s nearly finished the rinse stage and I’ll remove it before the drying stage stars because I think it’ll get too hot. Lots of shaking and a few days in the airing cupboard is the next stage.
